Planning a Festive Party and six tips on how to be the perfect host

Well the summer is indeed over. Boo! With the sandals and shorts neatly packed away in storage, and the kids firmly ensconced back in school, the countdown to the festive season is underway. Perhaps, like some, your holiday planning has already begun in earnest. Or maybe you, like many others are in denial that 2017 is already three quarters of the way done with already! Really??!!

Christmas Parties 2017

Of course, with only a couple of months to go to the biggest event of the year, many people, begin to turn their thoughts to planning an all-important festive celebration with loved ones, family, friends or corporate colleagues even. Perhaps this is your first time planning a festive celebration and you don’t know where to start? If so, and you are worried about being the perfect host this holiday season, we have the perfect reading material to get you started on your way. Happy forthcoming holidays and happy reading too!

  1. Set the Date Early. The party season is an extremely busy time of year for everyone and dates inevitably get booked up early. If you want to ensure good attendance at your bash, then you need to get your skates on and be organised. Book your venue as early as possible and send invites out at the very least. The rest of the finer details can be arranged once this is in place and the date is set.

  1. Start off on the right foot. As with all first impressions, it is important to perfect the opening to any party and create a festive atmosphere. Welcome drinks on arrival are a must to ensure the party spirit is fostered from the very beginning. A welcoming glass of champagne on arrival with a selection of aperitifs also allows invited clientele to break the ice and mingle with other guests.

  1. Book a headline act. Long after the champagne has been guzzled and the canapes devoured, make certain the highlight of your night is a headline act to remember. Whether this be a renowned six-piece jazz band, a death defying acrobatic act or simply a cracking singer, do your research and seek recommendations before booking.

  1. Deck the Halls. The sure fire way to get your guests in the party spirit is festive music and décor. The two naturally go hand in hand. Whatever way you wish to do it – tacky and cheerful or chic and sophisticated, ensure your room has plenty of festive cheer with lots of fairy lights, baubles, and of course, the all centre piece, the decorated Tree. The addition of some interactive party favours to each table such as paper party horns or poppers. If your budget will stretch as far, hiring in a Photo Booth is guaranteed to lead to some hilarious photos to share after the event! Be sure to purchase an array of photo booth props such as funny face masks, hats, feather boas, glasses and wigs for your guests to have fun with.

  1. Rock the Dancefloor. Of course, to rock the dancefloor you have to have good music. Period. Come on, we’ve all been there. The dancefloor is buzzing one minute, only to resemble the dusty plains of the Sahara Desert in the next second. Getting your music mix ‘bob on’ is vital to ensuring a night to remember for all the right reasons. If you are planning to compile your music independently without an experienced DJ, then do get feedback from others as to what works. What floats your boat music wise, doesn’t necessarily do it for others!

  1. Get Help. Engage the support of your venue’s resident Events Team to plan the finer details of the occasion. With detailed knowledge of your hotel and its staff, your resident Events staff here at Heartland Foxglacier can certainly help you to coordinate the key timetable for the night’s events; from the scheduling of pre-dinner welcome drinks and sit down meal through to liaising with any external suppliers and agencies in regards to entertainment on the night or venue décor.

Six Great Father's Day Presents for your Wonderful Dad

Personalised Father’s Day Gift Hamper:

There are many online companies offering specific Father’s Day Gift Hampers to buy. Better still, why not put together your own and make your present truly personal. Your dad’s favourite beer, ale and cider, some yummy cheese and biscuits, a selection of cakes and a personalised Father’s Day mug or glass would go down a treat if the weather is nice.

Pack in a small picnic blanket and some pork pies or two and you have a ready-made picnic to go!

  1. Gift Experience Day:

Maybe your dad would love to experience the thrill of white water rafting or perhaps he’s a bit of a speed demon and has secretly harboured a desire to race a Formula One racing car? Whatever his bag, treat your dad to the experience of his lifetime with one of the many gift experience vouchers available to buy either online or in major high street stores.

There are many to choose from to suit all tastes and budgets.

  1. Iconic Lyrics photo frame:

Ask your local Etsy shop to make you a bespoke photo frame with lyrics from your dad’s favourite band.  Song lyrics make for a really cool way to personalise a present for your dad and depending on what lyrics you choose convey a personal message to your loved one.

  1. Memorable Excursion:

Treat dad to a memorable day out at one of the many fantastic local attractions available throughout the UK such as the sights and sounds of our fantastic capital, London. For example, why not book a city centre bus tour to take in all the iconic sights without the inevitable stress or even a relaxing boat trip down the Thames?

Near to us, why not take a trip to the fabulous New Forest. A fantastic place to visit in the summer time when the trees are in full foliage and the ground basks in dappled sunlight, a day spent exploring all this fantastic woodland has to offer can be hard pressed to beat. Even better, why not round off your leisurly afternoon with a relaxing pint in Heartland’s hotel lounge, followed by a bite to eat in our acclaimed restaurant.

  1. Retro Record Player:

With all things vintage experiencing a resurgence lately, how about a cool retro record player as an alternative Father’s Day pressie? Vinyls from many of the older bands from your dad’s youth can now be purchased easily from flea markets and charity shops. Even bands from today’s music market has realised the power of the vinyl and have added this option to their marketing arsenal.

However, don’t expect them to come cheap! Reworked vinyls today can fetch anywhere from less than a tenner right through to near on a hundred pounds, depending on the popularity of the artist!

  1. A relaxing Hotel Mini Break:

For the ultimate in relaxation, why not treat your Dad to an overnight stay at Heartland. With beautiful grounds, and the New Forest on your doorstep, what better way to say ‘I love you’ can you get? Ten Not Thought Of Tips for the Time Pressed Bride To Be

  1. It’s A Date!

Before you book your wedding date, remember to double check whether your preferred date clashes with nearby planned events such as football matches or sports events which could seriously affect your guests’ travel plans, or limit local room availability.

Know ahead of time if your wedding date falls on the same day as a trade conference, charity walk, or other local event that could affect traffic and hotel room availability.

  1. Organisation is Key

Get organized and make sure all your wedding correspondence, key dates, reminders and balances due are all in one key location, The best way to do this is to establish a dedicated email address designated solely to your wedding day and honeymoon planning. Social Media Apps such as Pinterest are savvy tools to create an online ‘pinboard’ of the styles and inspiration behind your wedding day planning.

To Do List

Remember the all-important questions to ask your Wedding Venue of choice:

  1. Check out the Fine Print.

What exactly is included in the all-inclusive Wedding Day Package?

Make a list of the key things you would like answers to. For example, how many glasses of wine does each guest receive? Does the package include an onsite entertainment package such as a DJ or dancefloor and lighting? Is a light buffet or hot snacks for your Evening Reception included in the price?

Remember to look fully around your proposed venue. Review the key areas your guests will access on the day such as men’s and women’s restrooms (always a key indicator of the style and feel of a venue we feel), the Reception and its ease of use, and of course, the hotel grounds and main rest areas such as hotel lobby, dining room and lounge. Everything adds up to complete either a positive or negative impression for your wedding guests.

  1. The Journey

If your guests are travelling from around the country to celebrate with you on your special day, another important consideration is the ease of access to your hotel from the main motorway networks or railway connections. Remember to check out your guests travel requirements ahead of the big day and plan accordingly.

In the lead up to the Wedding Day itself, research and account for any recent changes to travel options to your hotel and update your guests appropriately.

Really Important – have a key contact list that you entrust to either your Chief Bridesmaid or Best Man on the day itself. That way, if any issue crops up with delivery of key wedding day supplies or services or non-or late arrival of guests, you will have a direct line those that matter to try to resolve any issues quickly and without it inadvertently affecting your day.

  1. Remember the Little Details

Remembering the little details that will make your guest’s day that little easier and taking your individual guests’ needs into consideration will go a long way to…. These may include:

  • Children’s Activity Books to keep the little ones entertained during the all important wedding breakfast speeches.
  • A fully supervised crèche for the little ones to allow Mum and Dad to truly relax and enjoy the party
  • Flip flops for the ladies’ tired dancing feet
  • A compendium of Restroom aids: Headache tablets, Alka-Seltzer, deodorant, sanitary wear, fresh breath mints, suncream for those sunny outdoor wedding celebrations.
  • A quiet room for your older guests away from the noisy Wedding Reception revelry.
  • Warm, snuggly blankets and personalized sparklers to wrap up in to watch the end of the night celebratory firework display.

Finally, on the big day itself, kick back and relax, safe in the knowledge that you have prepared accordingly and what will be will be….

Seasons and their changes in the New Forest

The ethereal and enchanting New Forest alters and changes shape with the advent of each new season. Every season brings different things to view and delight. Come and stay at Heartland and whilst enjoying a relaxing stay amongst friends, explore the acres of forest and discover the magic this beautiful area has to offer throughout the seasons.

Spring flowers in the forest

Spring is a wonderful season to visit the Forest; where the birth of many of its native animals can be seen. Of course, the Forest is renowned for its native free roaming ponies and pigs also, and these are a must see whilst visiting this special place.

Explore the abundance of flora and fauna that springs to life from late spring to mid-summer throughout the forest.

With the advent of the balmier weather, a popular activity during the summer season is of course walking or cycling along one of the many walking or cycling routes that weave their way throughout the Forest. Be sure to check out the local guides in regards to the level of difficulty or skill required for each route and pack plenty of water for the ride. A great family activity, this is one of the best ways to see the forest to the full.

Summer in the forest

With the Autumnal weather and the transition of summer into autumn, the Forest truly does come alive with colour. Crisp, cooler mornings and the dappled light of early afternoon into dusk makes this the perfect time for budding photography enthusiasts to visit. With an abundance of evergreen trees displaying their autumnal colours to perfection, this really an ideal moment to capture the beauty of this stunning corner of the world.

During the Autumn season, don’t forget to check out the New Forest Walking Festival; where you can take part in guided walks around the Forest.

Autumn in the forest

Lovers of magical winter walks through beautiful natural landscapes will find much to offer in the Forest during the Winter season. With a touch of snow on the branches and a chill in the air, the forest exudes a certain magical aura at this festive time of the year. Four Wedding Day Must Haves Every Modern Bride Must Have

A Professional Wedding Photographer

A straightforward, without argument ‘must have’, engaging a professional wedding photographer to document and record all the special moments of your day is a no brainer. If you have worked hard to save and plan for the most important day of your life, why now let an amateur loose with your wedding day photography.

Engaging the services of a professional wedding photographer will ensure those special moments and the story of your wedding day is captured on film for you and your family to treasure for years to come. Remember to organize several planning meetings with your preferred photographer in the lead up to your day to work through the style of images you love and to ensure your photographer understands the plans for the day and which images they need to capture.

Professional photography

A Weather Plan B

Whatever your choice of wedding venue or time of year planned for your wedding, it is always wise to have a Plan B when it comes down to the unpredictable British weather.

If it is sunny and beautiful, all well and good. Your wedding day photographs and pre-dinner drinks on the lawn are secure. If not, what are the options? Check out the alternative locations within your hotel grounds for photographs. Perhaps your venue has a fantastic statement staircase for example or a beautiful stone fireplace or stained glass window to frame your pictures.

If unsure, speak to your Wedding Event Coordinator to find out your options should the weather turn sour.

A Wedding with Personality

From the wedding ceremony itself to the after party there are many ways you can inject some of your personality as a couple into your special day. Look at what is important to you both as a couple – your likes and dislikes, your interests and past experiences and inject elements of these throughout your day. Below are some examples are how this can be done:

  • You do not have to just settle for the traditional wedding vows – why not write your own? Now is the perfect time to tell your partner just how much you love them and what you hold dear.

  • Inject some wedding WOW factor with sophisticated and elegant venue dressing, statement flowers and table centerpieces but think of ways to add personality to your décor too. Perhaps you both have a love of travel and foreign places. Table centres denoting previously visited cities or countries and a memento from each place on table centres work well. Or perhaps you are big music lovers and each table can represent an album cover or music track?

  • Beautiful and carefully thought out lighting can bring a sense of ambience and romance to your celebrations. Mood lighting such as uplighters, bespoke lighting spelling out your newly married name or a special phrase you hold dear can bring a sense of individuality to your Wedding Reception and add personality to your décor.

  • If you are considering a themed wedding – perhaps you have a love of an iconic book or film – such as Alice in Wonderland – be careful how you introduce this theme into your wedding décor. Overly themed weddings can run the risk of appearing tacky and of course, over time may date. Remember to keep it simple. For example, introducing a traditional afternoon tea into your Wedding Reception with beautifully intricate sandwiches, cupcakes and scones and dainty china can be a great nod to the Alice in Wonderland theme.

Emergency Contingency Funds

Entrust your Chief Bridesmaid or Best Man with both money for any emergencies that may crop up and a list of emergency contact numbers for all your key suppliers on the day. That way, you can relax in the knowledge that if any unexpected situation arises, your right hand man (or girl) has it covered!

And, those time honoured traditions that you may simply do away with…

Bridal Veil

Who says the bride should wear a veil on her wedding day? With modern day bridal hair accessories such as crystal combs, headbands and pins; wearing the traditional bridal veil and tiara can seem somewhat dated. Let your dress and hair piece do the talking instead.

If you are looking to keep a control on the finances, do you need the five bridesmaids plus Auntie Sue’s darling Tom as your obligatory pageboy too? Perhaps your best friend from year dot as Chief Bridesmaid will be ok?

Wedding Favours

No guest ever remembered a truly great wedding for its amazing wedding favours. Ditch this dated tradition and save yourself a fair few pennies into the bargain too. We guarantee they will not be missed.

Formal Sit Down Wedding Breakfast

A formal wedding day breakfast can seriously add to your Wedding Day budget and can sometimes feel a little too formal and stuffy. Investigate your venue’s options for alternative dining and keep things relaxed. Options may include a summer barbeque, hog roast, or hot buffet for your guests. Some hotels will also allow certain outside caterers in to provide other dining options for your day.
